The area is situated near the mouth of the Mizunashi River and offers an excellent view of Mount Unzen. Shuttle bus service will be provided for the participants every morning, noon, and evening from May 11 to 15, 2012.
Access to Venue
Very limited (not daily) flights arrive at Nagasaki Airport (NGS) from Shanghai, China, and Seoul, Korea. Most flights originating outside Japan will arrive at airports in Narita (NRT), Haneda (HND), Chubu (NGO), Osaka (KIX and Itami, ITM), or Fukuoka (FUK) before departing for Nagasaki Airport or train depots for Shimabara. Please contact your travel agency for details.
| i. | Narita and Haneda: There are no direct flights between the Narita and Nagasaki airports. Delegates will have to proceed to Haneda Airport (Tokyo International Airport) by limousine bus or by train, which takes about 75 min or 2 hours, respectively. Taking a limousine bus, which costs JPY3,000, is easier but sometimes time consuming owing to traffic jams. The alternatives are the Keisei-Toei-Keikyu or Japan Railway (JR)-Keikyu lines from Narita to Haneda, which costs about JPY1,500-2,000 and takes around 2 h. Although several trains will take delegates directly to Haneda, others require multiple transfers. Nagasaki Airport is about a 2-hour flight from Haneda.
| ii. | Chubu: Nagasaki Airport is about a 70-min flight from Chubu Central International Airport in Nagoya. Flights connecting Nagoya and Nagasaki depart twice a day as of September 2011.
| iii. | Osaka: Delegates who arrive at Kansai International Airport (KIX) should transfer to Osaka (Itami, ITM) Airport for arrival at Nagasaki Airport, which takes about 70 min by limousine bus and costs JPY1,900. Charters depart from the ground floor of the arrival building every 30 min.
| iv. | Fukuoka: Delegates who arrive at Fukuoka Airport have to transfer to Shimabara by subway and trains, which costs JPY4,370. A 5-min subway trip connects Fukuoka Airport and JR Hakata station. From there, JR express trains (called Kamome) depart for Nagasaki every half to one hour. A transfer to Isahaya Station from Hakata takes 100 min. From that point, delegates can take the Shimabara Railway (not JR) or a shuttle bus prepared by GEOPARKS 2012 to arrive in Shimabara, which takes about one hour. Note: Delegates and their companions who plan to attend pre- and post-conference excursions should contact the excursion leaders at arrival and departure airports for transportation details.
